Salt on the Walls – visible signs of the Damp.
In this article I’d like to touch the issue of the wet internal and external walls – and discuss the signs and dangers of the Damp.

First of all – wet walls can be found anywhere, regardless of the building’s location, age, purpose, material and wall thickness.
Wet walls can be found in the basement, as well as on the third, fifth or tenth level.

What danger is coming from the wet walls?
Mainly – it can decrease the load bearing capacity of the building. Moisture destructs the materials: brick, mortar, concrete and the reinforcing inside. If the moisture is coming from the groundwater – it also consists of huge percentage of dissolved salts, which are specifically destructive for the walls.
Other than that – it increases the air humidity level, which leads to condensation, mold and fungi. Mold spores are then getting in the air we are breathing.
Electric plugs on the wet wall are also a hazard – especially if there are children in the house.

Evidently, it is really important to check the conditions of the walls in the building and, as soon as the Damp signs are spotted, take necessary actions to fix it.
What are the first signs of the Damp?
- Bubbly paint
- Drummy plaster
- Staining
- Salty deposits and Efflorescence
- Damp smell
- Mold appearance

After the Damp identified, we have to find the source of the moisture. There are basically two types:
- Rising Damp, which is explained in details on our website
- Lateral Damp or Penetrating Damp

Let’s touch on Lateral / Penetrating Damp – this is when the moisture / water is coming through the wall horizontally. The source can be:
- Damaged roof
- Damaged / Bad gutters
- Cracks in the brickwork / external render
- Plumbing, sewerage or storm sewerage leaks

But the most common and difficult to treat source of moisture – when the water horizontally coming through the wall from the ground outside, when the ground level is higher than the floor.
Brickwork or concrete – porous materials, and water with dissolved saltsgets easily absorbed, coming through.
The water evaporates, the salt stays.
That’s why we often see the salt deposits on the walls.

AWC Group is highly experienced treating Lateral Damp / Penetrating Damp – if it is impossible to perform external waterproofing by applying a Waterproofing Membrane to the wall, we solve the issue using a set of measures from the inside (Internal Wall Waterproofing routine). We do not use the traditionally offered Penetrating Damp solutions and Penetrating Sealers, because they are ineffective.
We are happy to provide the guaranteed triple protection, which ensures that the wall stays dry for a long, long time.
